'The making of'

the 'Pilgrim Fathers'
personal stamp

As is known to ‘Postzegeltotaaldag’, our attention on January 18, 2009 was devoted to
the Pilgrim Fathers. They were looking for 1609 - 1620 their refuge in Leiden.

On the occasion of this a personal stamp is designed.

Given the publication of November 4
in the 'Leidsch Dagblad' the used flag of Leiden calls questions.

This page gives you some
background information.

Also on the postzegelblog can be found information about 'the making'
and the stamp designer.

When the Pilgrim Fathers do you think - as a designer - of course not the modern flag
of Leiden, the flag should be a little fit the time (1600-1700).

Because at the sheet 'Beautiful Netherlands' - NVPH 2413 - there is finally
a pilgrim 'father' on a modern super bike!

Only since 1949 we have in the flag of Leiden horizontal banners red-white-red and
the crossed keys in a circle. The beards of the key ways out.

This is in contrast to the old Leiden flag used for the stamp; the beards of the keys
were inward-looking.

Before 1949 Leiden had a red-white flag, two horizontal strips: red top and white below;
such as Indonesia and Monaco or the inverted flag of Poland.

The flag for the personal stamp was used, can be found at: http://flagspot.net/flags/nl-zh-le.htm

This website offers much more in the field of flags, do you look around even further.
